New Fire Protection Rating Could Save You Money on Insurance
We have some great news to share. The Fire Dept was reevaluated by Insurance Services Office (ISO) in 2019. We learned that as of December 2019 we have an ISO Rating of 4/10. This improves our rating from a 6/10.
Clear as mud. If not read on. Taken directly from the ISO website. “ISO's expert staff collects information about municipal fire protection efforts in communities throughout the United States. In each of those communities, ISO analyzes the relevant data and assigns a Public Protection Classification (PPC®) — a number from 1 to 10. Class 1 generally represents superior property fire protection, and Class 10 indicates that the area's fire suppression program does not meet ISO's minimum criteria.” A lot of factors such as staffing, equipment, apparatus, training, mutual aid, dispatch, and water supply are used to calculate a rating.
So what does this mean and why should you care? The ISO rating can be one of the factors considered by SOME insurers when they underwrite and set premiums for homeowners or commercial business insurance. Other factors being equal, a community with an ISO score of 4 will see lower insurance premiums than one with a score of 8. This means you should check with your insurance company to see if this change can save you money. However, many factors can influence this. If your house is over 5 road miles from the fire station your property is rated a Class 10. Even this can get complex because sometimes Insurance companies will count a fire station whom we have automatic mutual aid with (Holden, Bradley, and Brewer are closest to our town borders). A property more than 1000 feet from a fire hydrant can also see higher premiums.
